Eight evenings 6pm - 9pm

This classroom based evening course is delivered by renowned Genealogist John Grenham.

It will provide you with a comprehensive guide to all the records, resources and research techniques you’ll need to trace your family history, combining detailed analysis of the relevant sources with hands-on internet research to produce a personalised research plan. The course includes a free subscription to the Irish Times Irish Ancestors service and an individual consultation with John Grenham.

EVENING 1:
Session 1: Introductions; Common misconceptions; The burning of the Public Record Office; Origins and evolution of Irish surnames
Session 2: Irish Place names; Genealogy Guides, printed and online;
Session 3: Online research: finding surname and place name variants; tracking surname histories; using online guides; using the free Irish Ancestors subscription

EVENING 2:
Session 1: Irish census records
Session 2: Irish records of births, marriages and deaths;
Session 3: Online research: using the National Archives census site; using other census sites; finding BMD records online; using online Mormon transcripts

EVENING 3:
Session 1: Irish church records
Session 2: Irish property records;
Session 3: Online research: using the church records sites; using property record sites; finding and assessing partial transcripts

EVENING 4:
Session 1: Irish 'census substitutes'
Session 2: Review of progress
Session 3: Online research: record walkthroughs; online census substitutes; review of progress
