The Power of Emotional Strength - 5 Key Take-Aways

PUBLISHED 14 February 2024

The Power Hour Skills Series returns for 2024

In the first Power Hour Skills Series webinar of 2024, we were joined by Colin Marks who shared his insights on the Power of Emotional Strength.

Colin is an Associate Lecturer at Ulster University's Business School, and he has over 36 years experience working with both public and private sector organisations at executive level. As Colin explained in the webinar he created the 'Purposeful Living Model' as a result of his lived experience, and it has become his template for building emotional strength to navigate life's ups and downs for the last number of years. The model is also the foundation from which Colin helps people who may be feeling the effects of work-induced stress.

What is Emotional Strength?

Emotional strength is the capacity to navigate and adapt to the ups and downs of life with resilience, self-awareness, and the ability to manage and channel emotions in a positive and constructive way.

It involves facing challenges, setbacks, and uncertainties with courage, maintaining a positive outlook, and fostering a deep understanding of our own emotions and those of others.

Emotional strength empowers us to endure hardships, learn from experiences, and cultivate a sense of inner balance and well-being.

Five insights from today's webinar...

1. Purposeful living helps to build emotional strength and to find peace in a chaotic world; eating healthily, minimising your financial exposure (whenever you can) and using your time productively can all contribute to purposeful living.

2. Emotional Strength is just one element needed to achieve balance for your overall wellbeing; other elements include intellectual, environmental and physical wellbeing.

3. Our relationship with the past, present and future have a profound effect on our emotional wellbeing; living in the present moment requires effort, but it can be achieved.

4. Acting mindfully enhances self-awareness, and leads to greater levels of self-acceptance.

5. Emotional Strength allows you to move forward even when you're unsure of how or where you're going.
